Choose your beach day

Lanikai or Kailua?

Lanikai: views & a lighter visit

Choose this shoreline when the island view is your priority and you can manage a visit without public park facilities. Plan access and the return journey before you arrive.

Kailua: a base for the day

Choose the beach park when designated lots, toilets, showers and a listed lifeguarded location matter most. Check current availability and conditions. [15] [16]

Overview

Island views, with a little more planning

A strip of sand, turquoise water and the Mokulua islands offshore: Lanikai is a different kind of beach day from Waikīkī.

Lanikai sits beside Kailua on Oʻahu’s windward coast. Reach the beach through signed public access lanes in a residential neighborhood; do not use private driveways. [1]

Come prepared for a beach visit without the convenience of a staffed beach park. Bring water, sun protection and whatever you can comfortably carry. If toilets, showers and a lifeguarded swimming location are priorities, consider nearby Kailua Beach Park instead. [2]

Our planning suggestion: make Lanikai a focused visit for the view and time on the sand, then use Kailua for a meal or a beach day with more facilities.

Getting there

From Waikīkī to the sand

Choose the full journey, including the final walk and the return trip. The directions links start at the Duke Kahanamoku Statue; change the origin to your hotel.

BUS

By bus

  1. Waikīkī → Ala Moana CenterTake route 42, E or W.
  2. Ala Moana → Kailua / HahaniTransfer to route 67.
  3. Kailua → LanikaiTransfer to 671, signed LANIKAI, then walk to an open public beach lane.

TheBus visitor guide supplies the Kailua connection; route 671 continues to Lanikai. Use its current timetable for your stop and return service, signed KAILUA TOWN. [3] [4]

CAR

Drive, then walk

Consider parking in an open designated lot at Kailua Beach Park and walking into Lanikai. Plan the walk to your chosen lane rather than treating a beach map pin as a parking destination.

Lot availability, fees and temporary restrictions need checking on arrival. If you drive into Lanikai, read every street sign and keep driveways and beach lanes clear.

WALK

Walk or get a lift

From Kailua Beach Park, follow the pedestrian route into Lanikai and use a signed, open beach-access lane. Access conditions can change with sand movement. [1]

For taxi or rideshare, agree a legal pickup and drop-off point. A map pin does not authorize stopping in a traffic lane, bike lane or private driveway. Confirm your return pickup before settling in.

Adult bus fares

Effective July 1, 2026: cash is $3.25 each boarding, without transfers. HOLO lists a $3 two-hour pass and a $7.50 24-hour pass; the initial card is $2. Check pass validity for this multi-bus trip. [5]

No fixed journey time or last-bus time is promised. Service, connections, traffic and your chosen entrance affect the trip. Use current timetables and alerts.

Bring supplies; no beach concession stand.

The local association describes Lanikai’s lack of park facilities. [1] Kailua Beach Park has listed restrooms and showers. Its lots and comfort station close 10 p.m.–5 a.m.; grounds have a separate midnight–4 a.m. closure. [6]

Public access is not the same as step-free access

Use signed rights of way and inspect the lane before committing to it. This guide has not verified a continuous wheelchair route from a bus stop or parking space onto Lanikai’s sand. Soft sand and changing shoreline conditions need individual assessment.

For an assisted beach visit, ask the City about alternatives. Its wheelchair page includes an August 20, 2025 unavailability notice for Kailua’s beach wheelchair and bathhouse mat. Confirm current service at (808) 768-8980. [7]

Parking & crowds

Arrive with a plan, not a parking assumption

CITY PARKING UPDATE

Check signs and the latest phase

The City’s June 15, 2026 announcement describes two phases: no-parking-at-any-time signs on Mokulua Drive and designated loading zones first, followed by restrictions on Aʻalapapa Drive and side-street changes after a traffic study. It does not confirm that every phase is complete. [8]

Do not rely on older guides promising unrestricted street parking. Use posted signs, check the City update and keep emergency access clear. Loading zones are not beach-day parking spaces.

POPULARITY & TIMING

Plan for limited space

Lanikai is a recognized visitor destination, reached through a small residential neighborhood. The City’s transportation plan addresses visitor pressure and access. [9]

Our planning suggestion: try a weekday visit and travel light. Keep Kailua Beach Park as an alternative if access, parking or conditions do not suit your group. This is editorial advice, not a crowd forecast.

No verified Google Popular Times feed or live visitor count is available in this guide.

Parking fallback: use an open designated Kailua Beach Park lot and plan the walk. This guide does not confirm a current lot tariff, available spaces or guaranteed parking. Check signs before leaving your vehicle.

Ocean safety

The view does not tell you the conditions

Lanikai has no lifeguard station. For swimming, Hawaiʻi Ocean Safety recommends choosing a beach with a lifeguard on duty and asking about conditions before entering. Nearby Kailua is a listed lifeguarded beach; its coverage does not extend to Lanikai. [2] [10]

Stay within your ability, swim with a companion and supervise children closely. Do not interpret turquoise water or an attractive photograph as a safe-swimming signal.

Avoid brown water and storm runoff; check state water-quality advisories after rain. [11] Call 911 in an emergency and describe your location and access lane.

These external links do not provide a live safety rating on this page.

Offshore kayaking and snorkeling require separate preparation and a current conditions check. The Mokulua view is part of this visit; an island landing or paddling route is not included in the itinerary.

A simple visit

Give the beach time, then return through Kailua

01

Sort the arrival

Use the bus or an open legal parking place, note your return route and use a signed public lane. Bring your own water and make a toilet stop before settling on the sand.

02

Enjoy the shore

Take in the offshore views, spend time on the sand and check conditions before any water activity. Leave room for other beach users and carry your litter out.

03

Return through Kailua

Choose a meal near the park or in town and leave time for your bus connections. Pair the two beaches if it suits your group, rather than adding every nearby attraction.

Compare Kailua and Lanikai →

The nearby Pillbox Trail is a separate hike. The local association warns of steep, damaged terrain; do not treat it as a casual add-on in beach footwear. [1]

Frequently asked questions

Before you go

Can I visit Lanikai without a car?

Yes. Use the Waikīkī–Ala Moana–Kailua connection, then route 671 to Lanikai and a final walk. Check the current timetable and your return trip. See transport details.

Can I park directly at the beach?

There is no dedicated Lanikai beach lot. Neighborhood rules are changing through the City’s phased plan; use signs and current City information. Consider an open designated Kailua Beach Park lot and a walk. See parking details.

Where can I use a restroom?

Plan a stop at nearby Kailua Beach Park, where restrooms and showers are listed. Lanikai does not have public park facilities. Check closures before relying on the park.

Is Lanikai suitable for children?

A shore visit can suit a family prepared for the walk and lack of facilities. There is no lifeguard station at Lanikai. For water activities, choose a lifeguarded beach, check conditions and supervise children closely.

Are all public access lanes usable?

Do not assume that every lane reaches usable sand. Inspect the entrance, follow signs and respect private property. Shoreline conditions can change.

Should I choose Kailua or Lanikai?

Choose Lanikai for the views with a lighter, self-contained visit. Choose Kailua Beach Park when parking, toilets, showers and a lifeguarded location matter most. Conditions and access still need checking at either beach.
